Mission
To lobby and advocate for a devolved, sustainable and democratic local government system in Kenya through:
• Creation of coalitions and partnerships
• Use of policy research findings to inform, for example, areas of lobbying and advocacy, and
• Capacity building of the association members

Mandate
The mandate of ALGAK is to:
• Lobby the Government and other stakeholders for the development of an autonomous and sustainable local government system in Kenya
• Advocate for good governance in member local authorities
• Build the capacity of members to maintain sustainable local government system in Kenya
• Provide other services to members as needed from time to time and within the association’s available resources

The following are ALGAK’s main programme areas, which are meant to:
• Strengthen ALGAK’s institutional capacity
• Develop strong strategic partnerships and alliances
• Build capacity of local authorities
• Implement and sustain devolved local government system to address socio-economic development agenda, such as the Millennium Development Goals
